Motor Neurone Disease Global Awareness Day - Wednesday 21st June

Farleigh supports people living with motor neurone disease

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a life-shortening and progressing neurological disease that affects the brain and nerves. Farleigh Hospice offers a range of care and support to manage symptoms and help our MND patients to achieve the best possible quality of life.

Our MND Co-ordinator, Joseph Giuseppe Franco, explains our co-ordinated approach and some of the services that we provide.

“Farleigh Hospice takes a flexible, holistic approach to motor neurone disease, providing clinical, practical, spiritual and emotional support.

Our patients are referred to us from MND centres in Romford and London and local consultants or they can also self-refer themselves through the Farleigh website. As the MND Co-ordinator, I am their first point of contact. I will go to see them in their home with one of our clinical team for their initial visit.

My role is non-clinical. I co-ordinate the different services within and outside the organisation, talking to consultants, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists and other professionals, so our MND patients and their families get the holistic support that they need.

I am the link between Farleigh and the MND Association which provides grants and helps with home adaptations, including ramps and stair lifts. I also liaise with other charities such as Challenging MND whose aim is to make memorable experiences for MND patients, including special journeys, making wishes come true and attending shows.

We help the patient and their family to plan for their future, whilst also supporting them to make the most of their time now.

Farleigh Hospice supports Global MND Awareness Day on Wednesday 21 June. Six people are diagnosed with motor neurone disease every day in the U.K. The early symptoms of MND can look similar to a stroke or stress so it is important to raise awareness to give them an early diagnosis.”
