In celebration of Volunteers Week in 2025, we want to shine a spotlight on our volunteers who use their skills and working backgrounds to help Farleigh run smoothly.
This month marks a special milestone for one of Farleigh Hospice’s most devoted volunteers. David, a familiar face to many within the Farleigh community, is celebrating ten years of giving back—ten years that have been shaped by personal experience, heartfelt gratitude, and a tireless drive to support others.
David’s journey with Farleigh began shortly after his retirement from a 42-year career in banking. “It all started with a Facebook post,” David recalls. “Farleigh were looking for someone to distribute leaflets around Braintree. I had just retired and was looking to fill my time with something meaningful.” That one small act of volunteering quickly evolved into something much bigger.
From his past work experience, David brings many skills forward with him:
- He was always complimented at work for his 'attention to detail' and that has really come in handy when assisting with supporter database, ironing out errors, duplications and updating records.
- Having the confidence after working in the bank to stand in front of people and talk to them – a huge part of the voluntary work he does in and out of the office.
- Known for his ability to warmth and ability to persuade, he rarely hears "no" when asking local businesses to display Farleigh posters and leaflets.
- His past experiences with health and mental wellbeing have made him more empathetic and attuned to others' struggles.
Since 2015, David has been a key player in promoting Farleigh’s major fundraising events, including Cycle for Life, Walk for Life, Santa Fun Run, and Christmas Tree Recycling. From Braintree to Witham and now across most of Farleigh’s catchment area, David spends countless hours researching locations, placing posters, and connecting with businesses to help spread the word. His work ensures that as many people as possible hear about and participate in our fundraising events.
But his support doesn’t end there. Every Friday, David can be found at Farleigh’s North Court Road office, volunteering for around seven hours.
One of his most visible roles is as a Collection Tin Coordinator. David has personally encouraged nearly 30 local establishments to host donation tins and takes responsibility for collecting and replacing them on a regular basis. “It’s about building trust,” he says. “And showing people how their contributions help.”
David’s motivation is deeply personal. His late wife Jane received care from Farleigh after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2011. “The care and compassion shown by the team was extraordinary,” David says. “It helped Jane, me, and our daughters through the most difficult time in our lives.” After Jane’s passing in 2014, David turned his grief into purpose—supporting Farleigh not just through volunteering but also organising his own fundraising events that raised over £1,500 last year alone.
Reflecting on what he enjoys most about his role, David highlights the people. “Whether in the hospice or out in the community, I’ve made so many new friends. Volunteering has kept me physically and mentally active—and I get to help, even in a small way.”
His message to anyone thinking about volunteering?
“Do it! Whether it's in the office, in the Farleigh stores, or out in the community—every bit helps. If you're curious, come out with me and see what it’s all about.”
Farleigh Hospice is incredibly grateful for David’s unwavering dedication over the past decade. His story is a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make—and the lasting impact of compassion in action.
Thank you, David, for being such a vital part of the Farleigh family.
