Chelmsford siblings Alice and Henry Turk took on the Captain Tom 100 challenge, raising £630 in aid of Farleigh Hospice.

Alice, aged six, and Henry, aged three, did 100 star jumps each to raise money for the hospice as part of the Captain Tom 100 challenge over the weekend of 30 April to the 3 May.

The pair were captivated by the fundraising efforts of Sir Captain Tom Moore during the first lockdown. He provided inspiration and positivity in what was an uncertain time, as he did for so many others across the country. The children followed his fundraising avidly and when their grandmother, Deborah, suggested the children take part in the CaptainTom100 challenge, they thought it was a great idea. Alice quickly came up with the idea to do 100 star jumps and the challenge was set!

Alice did her 100 star jumps all in one go and was still bursting with energy afterwards. Younger brother Henry broke his up into more manageable chunks starting with 20 one day and doing 80 the next, with regular rest periods in between. He used the trampoline to add some height to his jumps and drew strength from his Incredible Hulk costume. Once the children had completed their challenge they did a victory lap around the garden to celebrate their achievement.

Mum Stacey Turk said: “I am so incredibly proud of the children for doing something to give back to the local community. We chose to support Farleigh Hospice as it is well known for the great support it provides to people affected by life-limiting illness and bereavement in our local community. A former colleague of mine was helped by Farleigh Hospice, and her family were also supported by them after she passed away. We were very aware that fundraising has been challenging during the pandemic and so wanted to do our part to help.”

Commenting on their achievement Alice Turk said: “I really enjoyed raising money in aid of Farleigh and I am looking forward to doing more challenges soon.”

Mum, Stacey added: “Alice and Henry not only enjoyed the challenge element, they also loved doing something to help others. They are keen to undertake another charity fundraising activity in the future, but we haven’t decided what that will be yet. For now, Alice is looking forward to her next sporting challenge - her school sports day in June.”

The children are both fans of the series of books Little People, BIG DREAMS - the Captain Tom book in particular being very special to them.

Deborah de Boltz, Farleigh Hospice Fundraising Manager said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to Alice and Henry for taking on the Captain Tom 100 challenge in aid of Farleigh Hospice. They did a fantastic job of completing their 100 star jumps without getting too tired. The money raised will help us to continue to support people in mid-Essex affected by life-limiting illness and bereavement free of charge. It is the generous fundraising actions like those of Alice and Henry that make it possible for us to continue to do what we do.”
