What we stand for

Hospice care is so much more than a building where you go to die. Most hospice care happens at home and in the community. And when we care for someone at the end of their life we’ve only got one chance to get it right. It’s vital that we’re there to offer expert and compassionate support to every family in need.

But for many people in the UK today hospice care isn’t an option. People are dying in places they don’t want or need to be, longing for the warmth of their own beds. And many families are left traumatised, with little or no support at the time they need it the most.

Hospice care aims to provide tailored support to those with a terminal or life-limiting condition, no matter who they are or what they’re going through. We listen, understand and treat people with the dignity and respect they deserve.

It’s astonishing that on average more than 325 people a day, who would benefit from hospice care, are not able to get the compassionate and expert support they need. And as the strain on our NHS increases and our population ages, this number is set to increase further.

We believe everybody has the right to hospice care, and we urgently need your help so we can:

  • Fund more nurses in the community
  • Offer respite for families, so siblings still feel the warmth of home
  • Offer 24/7 care, wherever they may be
  • Offer vital bereavement support to families to help them cope
  • Work with diverse communities and better understand their different needs
  • Work in partnership with others such as care homes, GPs, hospitals and ambulance services

What is the Open Up Hospice Care campaign?

The Open Up Hospice Care campaign launched in July 2017. The pilot focused on the fact that one in four people were not able to get expert care at the end of life. The second year of the campaign launches this March and focuses on hospice care provided in the home and the community.

Hospice care aims to provide support to every family facing a life-limiting or terminal condition, whoever they are and wherever they need it. This campaign will help ensure that people are aware of hospice care and that more people can access the expert and compassionate support it provides.
