Make a Will, make a difference

During the month of September, you can get expert legal advice from a local law firm to write or update your Will in exchange for a donation to Farleigh Hospice. The solicitors make your Will, waiving their normal fee and instead ask for a suggested donation of either £75 for a basic single Will or £110 for a basic mirror or double Will – every penny of which goes directly to the hospice.

Types of Wills

A simple Will is one in which you nominate your executors and make straightforward bequests to a surviving spouse, other beneficiaries and any charities that you support. You may also appoint guardians for your children.

Mirror Wills are where a couple make Wills which reflect one another, usually leaving all the assets to the surviving spouse or children or simple bequests such as those to a charity.

More complex Wills, such as those involving arrangements trusts, which are not classed as simple Wills, may incur charges from the solicitor in addition to any donation to Farleigh Hospice. The fee should be discussed with the solicitor and agreed in advance.

Why make a Will?

Even though writing a Will is important, people often find it difficult to fit into their schedule. There are plenty of moments that lend themselves to writing or updating a Will; whether it is getting married, buying a property, becoming a new parent, or grandparent.

Also the new Inheritance Tax Allowance known as the “Residence Nil Rate Band” came into force in April 2017, meaning that reviewing your Will has never been more important. This is because of a number of legal technicalities, the wording of your Will may actually prevent your estate being able to claim this allowance.

If your Will was prepared prior to October 2007, it may have incorporated a form of Trust which was usually included for Inheritance Tax purposes. However since 6th April 2017, having these types of Trusts incorporated within your Will may actually prove to be disadvantageous from an Inheritance Tax position.

Wills are documents that should be kept under regular review, to safeguard against changes in the law, such as the above.

Our Make a Will Month is an opportunity for you to make or update your Will, and ensure that those you care about will be provided for in the way that you wish. Once completed, you can relax with the knowledge that everything is in order.

How to make a Will

Taking part in our Make a Will campaign is an excellent opportunity to get your affairs in order, whilst also helping to support local people affected by life-limiting illnesses. There is no obligation to leave a gift in your Will to Farleigh Hospice. However, once you have provided for your family and friends, you could always consider making a Good Will Gesture and help to ensure that we can continue making a real difference to local families, both now and in the future.

All you will have to do is contact one of our registered solicitors (listed below) using the contact details provided, and be sure to quote Farleigh Hospice’s Make a Will campaign when you are making your appointment.
