Sunday 9th May was a great day for taking a stroll along the beautiful Essex canal side, especially if you were one of the 1,551 people ‘Walking for Life for Farleigh Hospice’. Participants completed one of two different routes; a longer 21.5km walk starting at Heybridge Basin, or a shorter 10km route from Paper Mill Lock, with both routes finishing at Wharf Road in Chelmsford. Approximately £140,000 was pledged in sponsorship on the day and this fantastic amount will go a long way in funding Farleigh Hospice’s free caring services over the coming months, making a real difference to local people affected by life limiting illnesses across mid Essex.
Farleigh Hospice’s Corporate & Events Manager, Sarah Childs, says; “Our 18th annual ‘Walk for Life’ was a great success and I am delighted that so many people took part and turned up on the day to support their local hospice. Farleigh Hospice relies on people taking part in fundraising events such as the ‘Walk for Life’, leaving gifts in their Wills and making donations to raise around £6,750 each and every day to continue providing our free caring services across mid Essex. I would like to congratulate everyone for completing their chosen walk and thank them most sincerely for their participation.”
“A big ‘thank you’ also to M&G Investments who supported the event and to everyone else who was involved in making this year’s ‘Walk for Life’ happen. The funds raised from this year’s event will play a big part in funding the care Farleigh Hospice provides free of charge to local people affected by life limiting illnesses.” Sarah says.
Farleigh Hospice is also extremely grateful to the 150 volunteers who helped run the event by either marshalling or registering participants. Without their help and support the event would not be able to take place. These volunteers included people from The Red Cross, Raynet Radio Communications, Maldon Army Cadets and Police Cadets, along with other members of the local community served by Farleigh Hospice.
The ‘Walk for Life’ event shows a real sense of community spirit, not only in the number of people taking part and volunteering, but also in the support we receive from local organisations. Along with M&G Investments we would also like to say a special ‘thank you’ to Brentwood Coaches, Essex & Suffolk Water and Eat Natural. Their support enabled us to provide snacks, water and transport to our walkers.
