Catalogue of Care

Welcome to the first Farleigh Hospice 'Catalogue of Care'.  The catalogue provides you with the opportunity to give a friend or yourself a different type of gift – one that will support hospice care in your local area.

A Special Bath

A long soak and relaxation in a bath is one of life's most simple pleasures. But for some of our patients their life limiting illness means that they are unable to get in and out of a bath and enjoy what we all take for granted. Our nurses help patients in our six special baths, leaving them relaxed and refreshed. Last year we provided 1,050 baths.

A Caring Massage

In today's busy world we can all feel stressed. But for someone with cancer, stress about their illness can be all consuming. A massage with aromatherapy oils by one of Farleigh Hospice's trained therapists can help relieve tension and bring comfort through contact with another human being.  Last year we provided 784 massages and other complementary therapies.

Help to breathe

For someone with lung disease, breathlessness is likely a common problem. It affects all areas of life, making difficult to carry out daily activities and can cause anxiety and panic. The 'Easy Breathe Group' run by Anne, our Physiotherapist, teaches patients coping strategies and to control breathing to reduce their anxiety. Last year our physiotherapist ran 85 groups and £32 could pay for two patients to attend the three “Easy Breathe” sessions.

A Special Day

The three Farleigh Day Hospices play a vital part in supporting patients and their families. Nurses are on hand to care and a team of volunteers add to the positive atmosphere.  For patients living alone the day hospice relieves isolation, whilst for those living with families it provides a break for carers to recharge their batteries. But perhaps the most important benefit is that patients can share their feelings with others in a similar situation. Last year saw 2,984 attendances at the day hospices.

A Clinic Treatment

Many treatments for cancer, as well as the illness itself, can cause anaemia. The tiredness that this leads to can severely limit a patient's quality of life.  A blood transfusion at one of our three clinics in mid Essex will replace blood cells, reducing fatigue and giving a patient more energy. Receiving treatment in a comforting environment surrounded by the familiar faces of nurses you trust is at the heart of the Farleigh Hospice clinics. Last year we provided 519 blood transfusions and other treatments.

A Home Visit from a Specialist Nurse

Most people diagnosed with a life limiting illness want to remain in the comfort and privacy of their own home surrounded by friends and family. The specialist community nursing team at Farleigh Hospice play a key role in making this possible by visiting and supporting patients at home.  Often the first contact a patient has with the hospice will be with one of these nurses. Not only do they help control pain and symptoms with their expertise, they also provide a skilled listening ear and knowledge of all the help that is available locally. Last year our seven nurses made 3,237 visits.

Bereavement Support for Families

The loss of a parent, child, spouse or other close relative can have devastating effects.  Quite often these feelings can be even harder to deal with as the bereaved often feels they are the only person in this situation. An important part of the caring work at Farleigh Hospice is to help those whose loved ones have died. Our bereavement workers and trained volunteers organise group meetings where people going through similar emotions can talk and share in a safe environment. Last year our team supported 307 people through these groups and a gift of £120 could run 2 groups.

Help to Return Home

The majority of patients who come to stay at the Hospice want to return home. Helen, our Occupational Therapist works with patients to identify the equipment and facilities they need to make this happen. From grab rails and stair lifts that help with day to day living to equipment that lets a patient continue with their favourite hobby, Helen, along with the wider hospice team, helped 54% of our in-patients return home. A gift of £200 could help make this happen for 10 patients.
