May - June 2013 – an Exhibition by Phil and Pam Hinde

Phil Hinde who lives in Essex has been painting for many years. He originally took it up as a hobby whilst serving in the Merchant Navy as a radio officer. He started painting in oils using a palette knife technique, developing and adapting it to his own style, and thirty years ago switched to painting mainly with watercolour because he felt it was time for a change and, “I felt that some of the effects that I was trying to achieve like lightness and delicacy were not possible with oil.”

When made redundant from Marconi 22 years ago, Phil took up painting full time and sold his pictures throughout the country with many going to Europe and the USA.

His favourite subjects are of his own area of Essex and Suffolk with its old blackboarded barns and pink washed cottages and of course the Cotswolds with its picturesque villages of warm yellow ochre stone set amongst the undulating landscape. Some of his more recent work tends towards the abstract.

Phil, now in his mid seventies, is completely self taught and prefers to learn from his own mistakes and to develop his own unique style of balance and counterchange as displayed in this exhibition. Although he has not yet returned to his original medium of oils, he frequently uses acrylic paint to get back his earlier style of using a palette knife with thick paint.

His pictures have been used as limited edition prints and greetings cards. He has recently had some of his work published by Readers Digest as an instructional ‘How to Paint’ book.

Much of his time is spent giving instruction to others on the technique of watercolour and acrylic painting and he has given many demonstrations on the practical aspects of landscape painting to local art societies. He teaches on a regular basis at his home in Wyatts Green and runs a number of day courses around Essex.

Phil has also been tutoring art and painting holidays in France and Spain and occasionally short weekend painting courses in Lulworth Cove in Dorset.

Phil has produced a 50 minute Video/DVD entitled ‘Paint with Phil Hinde’ and is planning on producing another DVD which will demonstrate some of the essential techniques in watercolour and acrylic. He regularly produces art scenery for the theatre.

To see more of his work, please visit philhinde.com where you will see many of his watercolours, acrylics and some examples from his sketchbooks.

Phil’s wife, Pam, has always been inspired by Phil’s artworks which brought about a combination of Pam’s enthusiasm for embroidery with joint designs. She enjoys patchwork, blackwork, goldwork and general embroidery techniques which is included in some of her creations.

Pam also produces her own designs for greetings cards.
